The rules fit on a napkin, but the handful of choices you make each hand — hit, stand, double, split — decide whether you play well or badly. The goal
Beat the dealer by holding a hand closer to 21 without going over. Go over 21 and you bust — you lose immediately, even if the dealer busts afterwards. That order matters: you act first, so the risk of busting is yours before it's the dealer's.
Card values
- 2 to 10: face value.
- Jack, Queen, King: 10.
- Ace: 1 or 11, whichever helps you. A hand with an ace counted as 11 is called "soft" (A-6 is soft 17) — it can't bust on the next card.
An ace plus a ten-value card on your first two cards is a blackjack, which usually pays 3 to 2.
How a round goes
- Place your bet.
- You get two cards face up; the dealer shows one card.
- You choose: hit (take a card), stand (stop), double (double the bet, take exactly one more card), or split (turn a pair into two hands for a second bet).
- The dealer plays by fixed rules, drawing until reaching 17 or more.
- Closest to 21 wins; equal totals push and your bet comes back.
The six decisions that matter
You don't need to memorise a full strategy chart to stop making expensive mistakes. These six cover most hands — and they're most of what my uncle knew:
- Stand on hard 17 or higher. Always.
- Stand on 13 to 16 when the dealer shows 2 to 6; hit them when the dealer shows 7 or higher.
- Always hit hard 11 or lower — you can't bust.
- Double on 11 against anything but an ace, and on 10 against a dealer 9 or lower.
- Always split aces and eights. Never split tens or fives.
- Skip insurance. It's a side bet that loses money over time.
Budget and pace
Rounds are quick, so set a fixed bet of 1 to 2% of your session budget and keep it flat. Raising your bet after a loss is exactly how a controlled session turns into a bad night.
