My uncle has a notebook. Twenty years of baccarat roadmaps, copied by hand from Genting, and he'll tell you with a straight face which "road" is due. He's a lovely man and he's wrong. Baccarat is the most played live casino game in Malaysia, and also the simplest: you're not playing a hand, you're betting on which of two hands will finish closer to nine. Everything after that is dealing rules the dealer applies for you. Here's how a hand works, what the side bets really cost, and how to read the roadmaps on screen without believing they predict anything.
The hand
Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker. Each gets two cards. Cards 2 to 9 are face value, tens and picture cards are zero, aces are one. Add the cards and keep only the last digit: 7 + 8 = 15 counts as 5.
A total of 8 or 9 on the first two cards is a "natural" and the hand ends. Otherwise a third card may be drawn, following fixed rules: Player draws on 0 to 5 and stands on 6 or 7; Banker's third card depends on its total and on what Player drew. You never make this decision. The dealer does, every time, the same way.
The hand closer to nine wins. Equal totals are a tie.
The three main bets, honestly
- Banker pays 1:1 minus 5% commission. House edge about 1.06%. The best bet on the table.
- Player pays 1:1. House edge about 1.24%. Almost as good.
- Tie pays 8:1 (sometimes 9:1). House edge around 14%. Avoid it.
Banker wins slightly more often than Player because of the drawing rules — that's why the commission exists. Even after the commission it's still the marginally better bet. That 0.18% difference is real but tiny; what matters far more is staying away from Tie and most side bets.

Standard baccarat, as above. No-commission baccarat, where Banker pays 1:1 with no 5% cut — except a winning Banker 6 pays half. That quietly raises the house edge on Banker to about 1.46%, so "no commission" is not the deal it sounds like. Speed baccarat, the same game with shorter rounds. Squeeze, where the dealer reveals cards slowly for the drama; the odds are unchanged.
Reading the roadmap
The grids beside the table are the roadmaps. The Bead Plate lists every result in order. The Big Road groups consecutive Banker or Player wins into columns, so a long column means a streak. The three smaller roads (Big Eye Boy, Small Road, Cockroach Pig) track whether the pattern is repeating or choppy.
Know what they are so the screen makes sense. Don't bet on them. Each hand is dealt from a shuffled shoe and the previous results have no effect on the next card. A streak of eight Banker wins tells you eight Banker wins happened. It doesn't tell you the ninth. Betting systems built on the roads — follow the streak, bet the break — change the rhythm of your bets, not the odds. My uncle's notebook is proof: twenty years, and the notebook still hasn't paid for itself.
How to play well
- Bet Banker or Player. Treat Tie as a novelty, not a strategy.
- Decide your session budget before you sit down, and stop when it's spent.
- Flat bet. The same amount each hand keeps a bad run from becoming a bad night.
- Skip progressive systems like Martingale. Doubling after each loss hits the table limit or your wallet limit fast, and the house edge is unchanged.
Baccarat is a low-edge game if you stick to the two main bets, and one of the worst on the floor if you chase the tie and the side bets. That's the whole strategy. Open a live baccarat table.
