Gambling is entertainment with a price, and for most people it stays that way. For some it stops being entertainment without them noticing the moment it changed. I watched that happen to a friend over about four months, and the thing that stayed with me is that none of us — him included — could point to the day it flipped. This page is for catching that moment early, in yourself or someone you know, and for setting limits that survive the night they get tested. It's written plainly because the subject doesn't need dressing up.
The signs, in the order they usually show up
In your head first. Thinking about the next session during work or with family. Feeling flat or irritable on days you don't play. Your mood for the day being set by last night's result. Betting as the way you deal with stress.
Then in behaviour. Sessions running longer than planned, most of the time. Stakes going up to get the same feeling. Playing to win back yesterday. Hiding how much or how often from a partner, or rounding the numbers down when asked.
Then in money. Using money that had another purpose. Borrowing to play, or to cover what playing cost. Depositing again in the same session after a limit or a loss. Feeling relief, not pleasure, when a session ends.
One of these is a bad week. Three or more, over more than a month, is the pattern. The people who catch it are the ones who look for it on purpose.
Limits that actually hold
A limit you set in your head is a limit you'll argue with at midnight. A limit enforced by an empty balance or a bank setting is one you can't argue with. Use the second kind.
Deposit limit. The most important one. Set a monthly figure that wouldn't change anything if it were entirely lost, and make it physical rather than a note to yourself: keep that month's money in a separate e-wallet or account, deposit only from there, and set your bank's daily transfer limit low enough that a bad night can't move more. Impulse88 doesn't currently offer a limit you set inside the site, so the bank's controls are the ones that hold.
Time. Decide the length of a session before it starts, and set an alarm outside the app. When it goes off, the session is over, whether you're up or down.
Loss stop. A per-session number, in units, past which you close the site. Not "one more to get it back". The site will be there tomorrow.
The break. If any of the signs above feel familiar, take a week off. Not to prove anything — to see what the week feels like. If it's hard, that's information.
How to set the numbers
- Work from what's left after every fixed cost, not from income.
- Pick a monthly deposit figure you'd be comfortable telling a partner or a friend. If you'd round it down, it's too high.
- Set it once, when you're calm, and give it a month before touching it.
If it's gone past limits
Ask support, through the site, to lock your account for a period you choose. They'll do it on request — say how long, and that you don't want it reopened early. Outside the site, talking to one person you trust is worth more than any tool. The secrecy is usually the heaviest part, and it was for my friend.
Impulse88 is a place to play for enjoyment, with your own money, at a pace you chose in advance. If any of that stops being true, use the limits, take the break, or tell support. Talk to support through the site.
